  1. 1947- . Afghan communist politician, a member
  2. of the Politburo from 1981, and leader of the
  3. ruling People's Democratic Party of
  4. Afghanistan (PDPA) from 1986, later state
  5. president. His attempts to broaden the
  6. support of the PDPA regime had little
  7. success, but his government survived the
  8. withdrawal of Soviet troops Feb 1989. A
  9. Pusthtun (Pathan), Najibullah joined the
  10. communist PDPA 1965, allying with its
  11. gradualist Parcham (banner) faction, and was
  12. twice imprisoned for anti-government
  13. political activities during the 1960s and
  14. 1970s. After the Soviet invasion Dec 1979,
  15. Najibullah became head of the KHAD secret
  16. police and entered the PDPA Politburo 1981.
  17. He replaced Babrak Karmal as leader of the
  18. PDPA, and thus the nation, May 1986. His hold
  19. on power became imperilled 1989 following the
  20. withdrawal of the Soviet military forces.
